Audition for Imogen Reeve & Co.

Imogen Reeve & Co. are seeking one highly technical, fast-learning, and creatively generous dancer to join the creation of Mother Computer: Folk Dances From The Future, a new dance theatre work exploring how AI invents and reinvents folklore, myth, and cultural memory through a feminist lens.

We are looking for a female-identifying performer. At Imogen Reeve & Co., we understand that gender is expansive and surpasses binaries, so trans, queer, and gender-expansive women are highly encouraged to apply.

The role includes complex choreography, creative contribution, research-led performance, and international travel, with all work paid at Equity rates. There is an element of endurance performance to the work, and so a high level of stamina is required.

Developed collaboratively in the company over the past few months, the work sits at the intersection of femininity, futurism, and folklore.

We draw on ancient, female, folkloric archetypes to reflect on the relationship between past and future imaginaries of womanhood. By placing these archetypes within a speculative, futuristic landscape, the piece invites audiences to question whether digital advancement is truly progressive, or whether it reproduces and intensifies patriarchal constructions of femininity and the body.

Performed as a trio and adaptable to both indoor and outdoor contexts, the work presents figures such as the mermaid, the mother, the snake and the witch, and invites us to examine how these archetypes are still informing how we view womanhood today.

Choreographically, the piece draws on collective movement structures found in folk traditions, disrupting them through repetition, collision, and fragmentation. Moments of shared rhythm give way to breakdown and dissonance, reflecting how digitally mediated environments reshape relationships, care, and belonging. These tensions sit in contrast to the close physical and communal interactions of historical folk practices, inviting reflection on how connection is formed in the present.

Visually, reflective metallic materials evoke both robotics and futurity. Activated by the performers, these materials transform into fluid, organic forms - suggesting clouds, rivers, and mythical creatures - highlighting the ways artificial systems reconfigure ideas of nature, myth, and tradition.

This work has been shared across Exeter, Leeds, and Trondheim Norway, as part of an ongoing research process, inviting dialogue with audiences, artists, and collaborators.

The upcoming creation phase will involve the new performer learning an existing role, as well as creatively collaborating towards the completion of the work.

Who We’re Looking For

You must be:

Female-identifying (inclusive of trans, queer, and gender-expansive women)
Available August–November 2026 (Full schedule outlined below)
Able to travel nationally and internationally (valid passport with 3 month validity after return from Germany)
Comfortable with shared accommodation during residencies
